Poly StyreneFrom: Bromley, Kent
I am honoured that one of my musical heroines Marian Joan Elliott-Said, better known as Poly Styrene the high priestess of punk, has taken time out from putting the finishing touches to her new album Generation Indigo (out later this month) to tell a star struck Devil about what makes her tick, her addiction to gossip (the communication form not the Beth Ditto fronted band) and her biggest influences.
The Devil: Why did you choose the name Poly Styrene and do you have any regrets about your choice?
Poly: I didn’t chose it, my manager chose it. I agreed with it as it represented a plastic image, and I was writing about consumerism…. I have no regrets. Most artists in the punk days had pseudonyms because they were worried about signing on the dole.
The Devil: What other names did you ponder before deciding it had to be Poly Styrene?
Poly: None, the first one was right.
The Devil: Who are the biggest influences in your life and on your music?
Poly: Srila Prabhupada, and my just departed ritual master Narayana Mahara
The Devil: What was the first record you owned and what was the first record you ever bought with your own money?
Poly: My Sweet Lord by George Harrison
The Devil: What makes you stand out from the millions of other artists across the world? What makes you unique?
Poly: Ooh I don’t know really, I’ve just always tried to be true to my character and spirit. Its a bit of a hard one to answer, because there are so many good artists out there.
The Devil: Did punk change music forever or was it just a short lived shock to the system?
Poly: It was a short lived shock to the system, but I think it changed art and fashion forever. Some of the ideas changed the way we think about things forever too.
The Devil: Favourite song?
Poly: Starman by David Bowie
The Devil: Favourite book?
Poly: Gophi Geeta, spiritual girly book
The Devil: Favourite Movie?
Poly: Seeta’s Wedding, Indian film
The Devil: Favourite word?
Poly: LUV
The Devil: Tell me something that you've never told anyone before.
Poly: I can’t because I’m such a big gossip, hahaha!
The Devil: If you were interviewing yourself what would your killer question be and how would you answer it?
Poly: Q: What makes you tick? A: Being in touch with the world and not being an ostrich and burying my head in the sand only in the world of entertainment.
The Devil: In these recessionary times what tips can you give the Devil's readers on saving money?
Poly: Don’t over extend yourself, but don’t go too tight because it keeps the money circulating and keeps the economy going, but obviously be true to what you can afford.
