The Wind-Up BirdsFrom: Leeds, United Kingdom
If there was any justice in the world then Yorkshire terriers The Wind-Up Birds (Literate Rock and Bird Maniax) would be a fixture on the obligatory list of bands for 2011. Unfortunately it's not going to happen because the Wind-Up Birds are a little too obtuse, a little too unusual, a little too caustic for the sensitive palates of today's journos. Thank god then for the blogosphere who have clutched the band to their ample bosom.
Their latest EP Courage Now, For Tomorrow Will Be Worse cements the band's growing reputation among the blogerati with tracks such as the hilariously accurate ‘In a Yorkshire Call Centre I Knelt Down and Wept’. It's the sound of dunking Half Man Half Biscuit in a cup of tea laced with cynicism and ennui. Yes it really is that good. It was a late contender for the Devil's top 10 of 2010 but given how late in the year it arrived it's turned into an early contender for the top 10 of 2011!
The Wind-Up Birds are one of the bands that I'll be watching in 2011 even if no-one else is!
